Entre Vestigios
The series "Entre Vestigios" explores the way we inhabit ruins in the context of rapid urbanization, where there is a constant cycle of demolishing and constructing new buildings. This series delves into the notion of how our living spaces are constantly in flux as old structures give way to new developments, with buildings being continually demolished and new structures erected. It reflects the ever-accelerating urban transformation that has become a characteristic of contemporary life, highlighting how we adapt to and coexist with the remnants of the past within this dynamic and evolving urban landscape. It also explores the ideas of privacy and the lost intimacy in public space, while emphasizing the value of lost or abandoned objects on construction sites during the ongoing process of urban development.
Vestigios
These oil paintings are the result of the artist's visit to Egypt in 2022 and depict sections of residential buildings, including facades or entire segments that were partly demolished as part of the expansion of the Cairo Ring Road. They capture the colorful and vibrant interiors of these buildings. Since they were not completely destroyed, the interiors of these buildings are now exposed to the public eye. This transformation highlights the stark contrast between their private nature and their current state as part of the new urban landscape and reality.
Each painting in this series strives to recapture the lost intimacy of these spaces. It aims to celebrate the unique human imprints and personalizations that once adorned these now-uninhabited spaces, preserving the intricate details and individual efforts that contributed to the personalization of each person's living environment, and the constant human endeavor to appropriate the spaces we inhabited and leave a personal trace.
Artefactos
As part of the serie, 'Artefactos,' involves the intervention of pieces collected from construction and renovation sites. In an archaeological gesture, pieces of latticework, rods, debris, and objects left behind by previous tenants are treated as relics of contemporary society and are presented as an archaeological record, a way to redeem the object. Through stainless steel intervention as a neutral element that survives the passage of time, it not only elevates their display but also the pieces' own aesthetic attributes and history. The narrative of these objects changes from rubble to artifacts, symbols, and anonymous reminders of contemporary ruins. It is at the exact moment when they lose their construction purpose that they gain their individuality and entity, showcasing their unique traces and aesthetics, the reason for which they were salvaged from the pile.
Entre Vestigios (poem)
As part of the series, the artist created a poem composed of 21 phrases that were inscribed on bricks, each marked with a fragment of the poem written by the artist in reference to the 'Entre Vestigios' series. Taking the brick as the basic unit of construction in architecture and the word as the basic unit in the construction of ideas. This poem was exhibited at the FAMA Art Fair in Monterrey, Mexico, alluding to the construction of a wall. The bricks were arranged horizontally during the fair, and as the event progressed, this wall was dismantled, and the poem was dismembered. This allowed each brick to display its own identity, illustrating how, even though each brick was a fragment of a whole, it was destined to exist independently, leaving the complete piece in ruins.
